The arts scene in Munich has never been more impressive and this city contains far more art galleries than you are likely to have time to explore. Therefore, you will need to select those Munich galleries that appeal best to your tastes, with choices varying from modern paintings and contemporary sculptures, to traditional European masterpieces and ancient Egyptian art works.
A number of outstanding art galleries are to be found along the Barer Strasse and include the Alte Pinakothek, the Neue Pinakothek and also the relatively new Pinakothek der Moderne (Munich Museum of Modern Art), which boats over 12,000 metres of exhibition space. For some of the oldest and best preserved sculptures in Munich, a visit to the Bavarian National Museum will offer a glimpse into the region's past. This building itself is also particularly appealing and together with its collection of sculptures, is also home to an array of antiquities, religious artefacts, ceramics, porcelain, tapestries, weapons, furniture, glassworks, musical instruments and silverware. The Bayerisches Museum is located on the south-eastern side of the Englischer Garten and is without a doubt one of the city's cultural highlights.

Full of old masters from all over Europe, the paintings at the Alte Pinakothek are not to be missed. Following a major renovation program, this museum is particularly impressive and features a number of prominent art works, by leading artists such as Botticelli and Dürer.

With a huge collection of paintings from both the 18th and 19th centuries, the Neue Pinakothek features a number of Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) pieces and Rococo exhibits. You are also able to enter the gallery from the adjacent Theresienstrasse.

Recently opened and famous for being the biggest modern art gallery in the whole of Germany, the Pinakothek der Moderne features eye-catching glass and concrete architecture. Inside you will discover a stunning collection of 20th-century art works, which include paintings, sculptures, photographs, design works and videos, with definite highlights being pieces by famous artists, such as Picasso, Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol.

Located next to the Schloss Nymphenburg, the Erwin von Kreibig Museum is housed in a beautiful historic building and celebrates the life of local 20th-century artist, Erwin von Kreibig, who once lived and painted in Munich. Various temporary exhibitions are also displayed here, alongside the museum's permanent collection.

Authentic and convincing replicas of many famous sculptures from both Italy and Greece are to be found at the Munich Museum of Classic Castings. This rather unexpected taste of classical art work includes plaster recreations of statues dating back some 1,000 years and is to be found within the Institute of Archaeology.
